And ye shall go forth in the power of my Spirit, preaching my gospel, two by two, in my name, lifting up your voices as with the sound of a trump, declaring my word like unto angels of God. Doctrine & Covenants 42:6

First Letter from the MTC

I’m alive!

And well. I can't believe its almost been a whole week since I saw all of you! I'm missing you guys, but having a great time here at the MTC. While I'm here I only have 30 minutes to write you an email, so I'm going to write to all of you in one email, because other than Mom's I don't really remember anybody's email address.

Since all of you asked about my companion, I'll tell you about that first. On the first day I met Elder Kearns, a pretty cool guy who comes from California and had already been to the MTC, but left because of medical issues. I got to know him pretty well for a couple of days, but he kept telling me that he was feeling like garbage, so we to see a doctor. I waited for him for about an hour and when he came out he told me he was going home tomorrow. I guess he had something like a concussion from a couple weeks previous from hitting his head on the floor during a basketball game.
So when he left I got two new companions! Elder Grill, from Genola, Utah, and Elder Bushman, from Midland, Texas. The three of us are already pretty good friends and almost never stop talking to each other. Elder Grill is a pretty goofy guy. He has some problems in social situations, but he knows so many things about the gospel that having him around makes everything better. Elder Bushman and I have a lot in common. We have a very similar sense of humor, have seen about the same movies and Youtube videos. We always have something fun to say and to laugh about.
So far it doesn't really feel that strange. I didn't have that, "Oh crap" moment when I woke up that first morning, but I was pretty tired. Life here is pretty great. During meals I can whatever I want until I'm full, and I've actually only had cereal twice because the options they offer are oh so choice. The three of us choose to wake up at 6 instead of 6:30 so that we can make sure we get a shower and have enough time to do it. Classes are great, my teachers Brother Pinnock and Brother Hainsworth are stellar guys that really care about how we can better help investigators. One thing that I don't really like in our classes, though his having to teach "investigators." Our teachers have personas that they role play and they have us teach them. They are so not real that it is hard to get myself to feel like I'm actually teaching or helping anybody in any way, but I'm trying to work on that.
Yesterday I had one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. A few times a week we have a thing called TRC, which stands for Teaching Resource Center. And in there they have volunteers that are either real investigators or members role playing, and we aren't told if who we teach is a real investigator or not. So for our first time we had a woman and Catherine, who was a less active member. She is going to BYU to become a history teacher. She loves hanging with friends and partying, and she hasn't been to church very often for a long time. My companions and I got to know her just by talking to her, and soon we started teaching the gospel to her. We were able to listen to what the spirit wanted us to teach her and I think we made a difference. We took her interest of history and adapted our lesson around that and to her. I can't believe how amazing I felt after teaching her. I don't think I've ever felt the spirit quite in that way and quite so strong. My companions and I were so happy for the rest of the night and knew that we were doing what God wants us to do.
And I also am District Leader, I forgot to add that.

You guys are my heroes and I can't wait till I get to see you guys again!

Now go and be golden,
Elder Sage Taylor
